Recreation and Sports Field

People visiting the field during last summer 2007 will have seen that the main gates are now permanently open, thus granting vehicle access to the car park.   New gates have been installed in front of the Scout Hut to stop vehicles driving on to the field and kerbing has been reposition to allow access for wheelchair users and prams/pushchairs, etc.   The coppicing and fencing work has now been completed and Phase II of the childrens’ play equipment is also in place.  New picnic tables and benches have been purchased and treated and will also be installed in the near future.

The Parish Council has worked hard to improve facilities and smarten the sports field up in general, for the benefit and enjoyment of all, particularly local residents. This includes:-

  • Two new 8’ wooden benches have now been installed at the car park end of the sports field, this location having been chosen to facilitate those with walking difficulties, in wheel chairs and for young children in push chairs to be able to access the seats.
  • A full size goal post is to be re-instated along the east boundary, between the new play area and the teenage meeting place
  • A one-off bid has been submitted to Maidstone Borough Council, for the purchase of the remaining play equipment
  • The damaged main gate post has been replaced
  • Contracts have been renewed for grass cutting and general maintenance.

However – frustratingly, the newly installed Dog Fouling signs, together with the old signs, have all been removed and stolen over recent weeks.   These thefts have been reported to the Police and the offender(s) will be prosecuted if they can be identified – Crime Report CZ/7540-07 refers.

This is a very disappointing development as dog fouling on the field continues to be an ongoing issue over a long period of time now and needs to be eradicated.  Councillors were also shocked to learn from a contractor working at the field, that a woman was seen to open the gate in the new fencing and enter the childrens’ play area with her dog – she did not have any children with her.   This can only be described as unbelievable, anti-social behaviour by a so-called responsible adult!

So that no-one is in any doubt, and in the absence of the signs, NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED WITHIN THE TWO FENCED CHILRDENS’ PLAY AREAS.

If you have read the item on Policing and the powers of a PCSO, you will have seen that PCSO White will be able to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for dog fouling.   He has already been appraised of the situation at the Sports Field and will pay regular attention to the area – so, if you are one of the inconsiderate dog owners who does not clear up behind your dog – you have been warned …………

Sadly, should this situation continue, the only other course of action open to the Parish Council, would be to enforce the Byelaws whereby no dogs are allowed on the Sports Field at any time, which would be unfair and a great shame for all the responsible dog owners / walkers – no doubt the majority.

There has also been a noticeable increase in the amount of litter being dropped on and around the field – please help to keep this now very pleasant Parish facility looking nice and take your rubbish home with you.
